How to practice scales on a ROLI or LUMI piano

Scales on a 24-key ROLI or LUMI piano: why they matter, which ones to start with, and the thumb-under technique.
Why scales
Scales train finger strength, evenness and help you know every key under your hand.
Start with C major
C major uses only white keys. Then try G, F, D and A minor, all available in the Exercises section.
Thumb under
To play more than five notes, pass your thumb under your middle finger. Go slowly until it feels smooth.
C major step by step (right hand)
Place your thumb on C and play C, D, E with fingers 1, 2, 3. Pass your thumb under your middle finger to play F, then continue G, A, B, C with fingers 2, 3, 4, 5. Coming back down, cross your middle finger over the thumb after F. Start very slowly; evenness matters more than speed.
Left hand
With the left hand, start with the little finger on C: fingers 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 for C to G, then cross finger 3 over the thumb to play A, and finish with 2 and 1 on B and C. On 24 keys, play the left-hand scale in the lower octave.
How to practice them
Two minutes of scales at the start of each session is enough. Play them in Rhythm mode at a slow speed to keep a steady pulse. When C major is smooth, move to G major (one black key, F sharp) and F major (one black key, B flat).
Frequently asked questions
What is the first scale to learn on piano?
C major, because it uses only white keys.
Why are scales important?
They build finger strength, evenness and knowledge of the keyboard.
Do scales fit on a 24-key piano?
Yes. A one-octave scale needs only eight white keys, so each hand has room.
