Beginner basics for ROLI and LUMI piano owners: finger numbers, a relaxed hand position and where to place your hands on 24 keys.

Finger numbers

On both hands, the thumb is 1, index 2, middle 3, ring 4 and little finger 5. Exercises and sheet music use these numbers.

A relaxed hand

Curve your fingers as if holding a ball, keep your wrist level and play with the fingertips.

Where to place them

On 24 keys, the left hand covers the lower octave and the right hand the upper one, thumbs near the middle.

Posture

Sit so that your forearms are roughly level with the keys, elbows slightly in front of your body. On a small keyboard like LUMI Keys, place it on a stable table at the right height and sit in the middle of the keys. Your shoulders should stay relaxed: if they rise, take a break and shake out your hands.

The five-finger position

Put your right thumb on a C and let each finger rest on the next white key: thumb C, index D, middle E, ring F, little finger G. Many beginner songs stay in this position, so you can play a whole melody without moving your hand. For the left hand, put the little finger on C and the thumb on G.

Common mistakes

Flat fingers, a collapsed wrist, pressing with the whole arm, or always using the same finger. Check your hand shape from time to time and follow the finger numbers when an exercise shows them.
