The lesson, step by step

  1. Welcome. Today, you're going to play your very first real song. You don't need to know anything: we'll go step by step, together.
  2. Look at the black keys: they come in groups of two and groups of three. The groups of two black keys are your landmarks.
  3. Just to the left of each group of two black keys, there's a white key. It's called C. It's the most important key on the piano.
  4. Watch first: we play the two Cs on the keyboard, the one on the left, then the one on the right.
  5. Your fingers have numbers: your thumb is finger 1, your index finger is 2, and your middle finger is 3. Put your right thumb on the middle C, your index finger on D, the next white key, and your middle finger on E. Listen first: C, D, E, going up.
  6. Now, let's go back down: E, D, C. Keep your three fingers on their keys and watch first.
  7. A finger can play the same key again. Listen: three Cs with your thumb, nice and steady, then D and E. Does that remind you of something?
  8. Your first song: Au Clair de la Lune, a French folk tune. You already know all of its notes. Listen to it once, then follow the falling notes.
  9. Well done, you just played your first song. Little secret: C, D and E are the first three notes of the scale. In the next lesson, we'll add two fingers and two notes.
