Lesson 3: The left hand
Wake up your left hand, discover the low sounds and play your first song again on the other side of the keyboard.
What you'll learn
- Place your left hand from C to G
- Skip a key: C, E, G
- Play “Au Clair de la Lune” with your left hand
The lesson, step by step
- So far, your right hand has done all the work. Today, it's your left hand's turn, and you'll discover the low sounds of the piano.
- The further left you go on the keyboard, the lower the sound. Put your left hand on the C on the left, with your little finger, finger 5. The other fingers rest on the next white keys: ring finger on D, middle finger on E, index finger on F, and thumb on G. On the left hand too, the thumb is finger 1. Listen first to the five notes going up.
- Now, let's go back down from G to C, from your thumb to your little finger. Watch first.
- Something new: you can skip a key. C, E, G: every other key, with your little finger, middle finger and thumb. These three notes sound great together. Listen first.
- Do you remember Au Clair de la Lune? We're going to play it with the left hand. Here, your little finger plays the three Cs. Listen first to the beginning.
- Here's the end of the song. The last note is long: keep the C pressed down until the end of the bar. Watch first.
- Your song: Au Clair de la Lune, all the way through, with your left hand. Listen to it once, then follow the falling notes.
- Well done, both your hands can play now. The right hand often sings the melody, and the left hand plays the low sounds. In the next lesson, we'll start playing them together.
