Falling notes or sheet music: what is best on a ROLI or LUMI piano?
Should you learn with falling notes or sheet music on your ROLI or LUMI piano? Pros and cons of each, and how to combine them.
Falling notes
Very fast to start: you see which key and when. Great for motivation and for learning songs by ear and by eye.
Sheet music
Slower to learn, but it is the universal language of music and lets you play any written piece.
Combine both
Learn a song with falling notes, then look at its sheet music to connect what you play with how it is written.
Why falling notes work for beginners
They show three things at once: which key, when to press it, and how long to hold it. You do not need to decode symbols first, so you play real music from the first session. That early success keeps motivation high, which is the main reason people keep practicing.
What sheet music adds
Sheet music shows the structure of a piece: measures, keys, dynamics and fingerings. It lets you play any written piece, including ones without a MIDI file, and it is the shared language of teachers and other musicians.
A balanced approach
Start with falling notes to build confidence and finger skills. After a few weeks, learn the note names on your 24 keys and the basics of rhythm. Then, for a song you already know, look at its sheet music and follow it while playing. Recognizing something you can already play makes reading much easier.
